About Fitout Brief

Nobody was covering the industry that builds
Australia's commercial spaces. So we are.

Trade intelligence for commercial interiors — a weekly briefing, a verified supplier directory, and Asia sourcing coverage no other Australian publication produces.

Why this exists

Australia's commercial interiors sector — retail fitout, shopfitting, hospitality design, commercial joinery — is a multi-billion-dollar industry consolidating fast. Listed builders are acquiring independent shopfitters. Procurement is professionalising. Sourcing is going global.

And no trade publication is watching it. General construction media covers towers and infrastructure. Design media covers aesthetics. The contractors, joiners, and suppliers actually delivering commercial interiors work have had no publication of record.

Fitout Brief covers this sector the way it deserves: reported stories with named parties, real cost data, project case studies, and industry moves — not content-farm filler.

Who's behind it

Fitout Brief is built and edited by Matt Preston: a VBA-licensed commercial builder (CB-L), with a decade in shopping centre management and working relationships with joinery and fixture manufacturers across China and Vietnam.

That background shapes the editorial: when we write about tender pricing, defect liability, or landed costs from Guangdong, it comes from operating experience — not a content brief.

Disclosure

Matt Preston also operates Functionco, a commercial fitout business. Functionco receives no preferential placement, ranking, or editorial coverage in Fitout Brief. Directory rankings are determined solely by listing tier, and editorial coverage is chosen on news value. Where a story touches Functionco's commercial interests, that connection is disclosed in the story.
